Pittsburgh Steelers cut ties with blazing-fast running back
(TNS) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have released running back Jonathan Ward, the team announced on Thursday. Ward spent most of last season with the team on the practice squad, but was called up from the practice squad for four games as a special teamer.
Ward played in four games for the Steelers, mostly on special teams. He put up five rushes for 22 yards on the season, with much of his playing time coming when injuries racked up in the room.
Ward was signed by the Steelers after a rookie minicamp tryout. Known more for his speed and veteran presence, he had an impressive training camp despite suffering a hamstring injury, and that allowed him to make the practice squad.
Ward, an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in the 2020 NFL Draft, has played with the Arizona Cardinals. New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans in the past. Along with Aaron Shampklin and Evan Hull, Ward was part of the team’s future signings.
Now, the Steelers will look to fill his roster spot elsewhere. The team has two open roster spots after cutting Ward, and will likely fill both of those spots before they head to training camp on July 23 in a month.
