Penn Highlands Urology completes 100th cystoscopy
DuBOIS — Drs. Indraneel Banerjee and John S. Banerji, urologists at Penn Highlands Urology in DuBois, have reached a significant milestone in patients’ health. A milestone 100 in-office cystoscopy procedures not only demonstrate Penn Highlands Healthcare’s commitment to state-of-the-art patient care, but also how physicians are providing highly specialized treatments.
What is a cystoscopy?
A cystoscopy is a medical procedure where a doctor uses a thin, flexible tube (cystoscope) to examine the inside of the bladder and urethra. Cystoscopies are used for a variety of reasons including diagnosing conditions like bladder stones, tumors, or bladder cancer; assessing the cause of symptoms like blood in the urine, painful urination, or frequent urinary tract infections; treating conditions by removing bladder stones or taking tissue samples; or monitoring bladder cancer after treatment.
“Having the advanced technology within the urology clinic provides advantages for the patient,” said Banerjee. “There is no anesthesia, less wait time, a better patient experience and we are able to treat especially high-risk bladder cancer patients who need four surveillance cystos a year and kidney stone patients who were waiting weeks for stent removal.”
Banerji added, “Visual inspection inside the urinary tract allows urologists to find and diagnose problems such as bladder cancer earlier (when it is more easily treated).”
