‘Round the Square: Flavors that scream summer
TASTY: There’s some flavors that just scream summer, like popcorn and dreamsicles.
Our friends at popcorn.org have combined the two to create a recipe that sounds promising.
Ingredients: 8 cups popcorn, 2 tbsp butter, 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk, 1 tbsp orange zest, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1/4 tsp orange extract (optional), Pinch salt, 1 cup mini marshmallows
Directions: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in condensed milk, orange zest, vanilla, orange extract (if using) and salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Stir in marshmallows until melted.
Drizzle marshmallow mixture evenly over popcorn and toss to coat. Arrange popcorn on a prepared pan, spreading into an even layer. Let stand until firm and cooled completely.
For some patriotic snacks, here’s a recipe for Red Hot Poppers.
Ingredients: 3 quarts popped popcorn, 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, 3 cups miniature marshmallows, 1/2 cups red hot cinnamon flavored candies, red and blue confection stars, red licorice string
Directions: Spread a large sheet of plastic wrap onto a work surface and spray with cooking spray. Spray a large mixing bowl lightly with cooking spray and place popcorn inside. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in marshmallows until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth. Pour over popcorn, add red hot candies, and mix well until coated. Spray hands with cooking spray and form mixture into 24 balls. Gently press red and blue stars onto balls. Place a piece of licorice string on top of each ball.
