Protect the pooch
OLEAN, N.Y. — Those of us with furry loved ones know that they are more than a pet; they are an important member of the family. With the warm summer months, more people are travelling with their dogs and bringing them along for family activities. Unfortunately, statistics prove that dogs are more likely to get lost during this time of year — especially around the Fourth of July due to the sound of fireworks.
What, exactly, should a dog owner do when their beloved companion goes missing? Knowing what to do can make all the difference, according to the Olean Kennel Club.
Club staff hope to prepare dog owners with a free public seminar held at 11 a.m. June 22 at the club, 1209 Vine St.
“Whether you’ve got a dog who’s a flight risk or just want to be prepared, this seminar offers peace of mind,” said Karen Benson, dog trainer and member of the kennel club.
The seminar will detail how to recover a lost dog, featuring experts Vicki Cusimano and Beth Thompson from Great Dames Trap & Recover.
“When a dog goes missing, people’s first instinct is often to call, chase or search loudly – but those actions can actually drive a dog farther away,” said Cusimano. “Lost dogs go into survival mode quickly, and the very humans they love can become something they fear.”
Unfortunately, scared animals are more likely to act by instinct rather than logic.
“Our goal is to teach people how to think like dogs and use calm, strategic methods that draw them in rather than push them away,” said Cusimano.
The event is open to the public and free to attend, but donations to Great Dames Trap & Recover are appreciated. Light refreshments will be served.
Attendees are asked to RSVP by Wednesday at oleankennelclub.com.
