Port Allegany woman jailed for alleged assault on toddler
A Port Allegany woman is in McKean County Jail, charged with an alleged drunken assault on a toddler at a Liberty Township residence.
Claudia Chavez, 36, of 3620 Route 155, is charged with aggravated assault and strangulation, second-degree felonies; simple assault, a first-degree misdemeanor; recklessly endangering another person, a second-degree misdemeanor; harassment and disorderly conduct, both summary offenses.
According to the criminal complaint, on June 4, state police were dispatched to a Liberty Township residence where a 3-year-old was being assaulted by a friend of her mother’s. When troopers arrived, the child had what appeared to be a thumb and handprint on her neck area. The victim’s family members said Chavez came out of a bedroom, stumbled over the child and then choked her. The victim’s mother was yelling at Chavez to stop, but she didn’t. The victim’s grandmother ended up punching Chavez in the face, at which point she let go of the child, the complaint stated.
A witness said he had been at the residence with Chavez throughout the day, and saw her drink “approximately two full bottles of vodka” before the assault, according to the complaint. The victim was transported to Bradford Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation, while Chavez was transported to BRMC for a mental health evaluation. During the entire trip, Chavez was noncompliant, belligerent and incoherent to the point where she had to be restrained, the complaint stated.
She continued to scream and yell while at the hospital. She was arraigned June 4 by District Judge Bill Todd and remanded to jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Todd at 9 a.m. June 23.
She is represented by court-appointed attorney Dawn Fink.
