‘Round the Square: Popular pet names
PETS: Do you share your life with a dog named Spike? While that might have been a popular dog name back in the days of Looney Tunes shorts, the American Kennel Club didn’t have it on the list of the 10 most popular names for male dogs in 2024.
In 10th place was Ollie, followed by Tucker, Finn, Toby, Bear, Cooper, Charlie, Terry, Max, and in first place, Milo.
What about for girl dogs? In 10th place was Rosie, followed by Lola, Sadie, Maggie, Stella, Willow, Lucy, Daisy, Bella, and in first place, Luna.
Did your pups make the list?
U.S. News and World Report had a more current list, but mostly the same names were on it. The only ones that were different were Coco for a female and Teddy for a male.
They break it down further, giving us results by state. The top three names for Pennsylvania were in third, Lucy, followed by Luna with Bella in first place.
Bella shared the top spot in New York, again with Luna in second. Third place went to Milo.
Some food items still remain in the top 100 names for dogs — Pepper, Oreo, Honey, Ginger, Olive, Cookie, Mochi, Peanut, and Taffy.
Three flowers are there, too — Daisy, Lily and Poppy.
The classic name of Buddy still makes the list in Washington, South Dakota, Missouri, Idaho and Hawaii.
We’re not sure what to think of this, but in the national top 100 list, number 53 goes to the name Dog. Not to be critical folks, but maybe try harder?
Also on that list are some that Disney may have pushed into familiarity — Simba, Nala, Ellie, Winnie, Gus, and Remi. Some are literary, like Scout and Marley. Or product based, like Oakley and Harley.
