Bradford rally to reaffirm loyalty to Constitution
Bradford for Democracy invites the public to Veterans Square on Main Street from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday for a Flag Day event in defense of fundamental American principles: liberty, justice and the rule of law.
As part of the national No Kings Day movement, nokings.org, the rally will honor “the radical and revolutionary idea that launched this nation — that no person, including the president, is above the law,” organizers said.
From the early days of the Continental Army to the modern-day oaths taken by military personnel, judges and new citizens, Americans have pledged their allegiance to a government of laws, not loyalty to a single individual, they said.
“We want to remind ourselves that our loyalty and duty are to the Constitution and the ideals for which it stands,” said David Fitz, chair of Bradford for Democracy. “Political leaders come and go while the constitution and its principles will remain steadfast as long as we hold them dear to our hearts.”
The rally will open with a reflection on the Pledge of Allegiance and its call for “liberty and justice for all,” followed by an exploration of the oaths that unify Americans. Organizers said “the event will underscore the urgent need to recommit ourselves to the principles of constitutional democracy.”
Featuring local speakers, the peaceful, nonpartisan event is open, organizers said, “to all who believe in the power of self-government and the enduring strength of American democracy.”
