Tyler Skaggs, son of Bradford native Jeremy Skaggs, pitched a no-hitter May 28 to key a 9-0 win over Carmichaels to earn the WPIAL Class A title.
Tyler is the third pitcher in as many years to throw a no-hitter in the district finals. Meanwhile, he extends a trend for Serra Catholic as well, becoming the sixth pitcher since the year 2000 to throw a no-hitter in a championship game.
“This is exactly what you want to do your senior year, take it all the way,” Tyler said. “It feels really good to see if we can get state; that would be pretty nice. We would be the first team (for the school) to get the title and the state title – if we do that.”
The family, who still has relatives in the Bradford area and visits occasionally, took a sports tour of Bradford on one recent trip.
Jeremy explained he and Tyler swung by Callahan Park and Tyler got to see where his dad played baseball his freshman year, before switching to track for the remainder of his high school career.
For Tyler, baseball was his preferred sport.
“I’ve basically been playing my whole life,” he explained. “It was the sport I was best at. I quit soccer when I was younger.”
He did note he plays basketball on occasion, including for the school in high school.
Serra Catholic advanced to the 2025 PIAA Class 1A baseball championships and played District 9 runner-up Clarion at Norwin Monday. Speaking with The Era prior to the game, Tyler said
“I think that whenever it gets into states, every team’s going to compete. Today it’s going to be a very good game and close. We’re going to have to push harder than we did.”
Sadly, their story won’t continue, as Clarion advanced and will play Greensburg CC in the Semifinals on Thursday.
Tyler plans to go to Westmoreland Community College for baseball.
