Primary election leaves much unanswered
There are still a lot of unanswered questions after Tuesday’s primary, with write-in votes having the potential to select candidates in many races.
Still unanswered as of late Tuesday was the question of whether the ballot for Smethport Borough Council was correct. The ballot said “Vote for One” with candidates Gregory Rounsville, Randall Taylor and Jeffrey Tanner. A citizen brought up that it should have read “Vote for Four.”
If the “Vote for One” is correct, the victor was Rounsville with 109 votes, followed by Tanner with 53. Taylor had 20 votes, and 28 write-in votes were cast; for whom those were cast was not immediately released.
Liberty Township voters appeared to have chosen “yes” to the ambulance question on the ballot — “Shall Liberty Township be permitted to raise the limit on the annual tax to support the ambulance up to one (1) mill?” The “yes” votes were at 118, while the “no” votes were at 72, according to the county’s unofficial results.
Norwich Township had a race for supervisor, with James Thomas and Benjamin Keesee. As of late Tuesday, it appeared Keesee had won the race with 46 votes to 39 votes cast for Thomas.
In Keating Township, David McClain was the only candidate running, and three seats were open. There were nine write-in votes cast, not enough for a candidate to make the ballot for the general election. There were no candidates on the Democratic ballot, and only three write-in votes cast.
There were very few Democratic candidates running for local offices, with some school board candidates who cross-filed and a smattering of folks seeking a seat on an otherwise nearly empty ballot.
Many important races were unopposed for the Republican ballot in the primary election — for McKean County, Daniel Woods as sheriff, Vicky Madine as prothonotary, Jody Bloomquist as treasurer and Melissa Jo Smith as treasurer. For Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, Michele Alfieri-Causer was unopposed.
For Bradford City Council, Republican incumbents Tim Pecora, Kristofer Goll and Terry Lopus were unopposed, as was newcomer Mark Young for a two-year term.
There were no Democratic candidates on the ballot for those offices.
As of The Era’s press time, 15 of 42 precincts had been counted at the McKean County Elections Office. Votes were yet to be counted for Bradford Area School Board and Mount Jewett Borough council. Results will be updated online when available, and in Thursday’s edition.
For Bradford Area School Board, there were four 4-year, at-large terms available and eight total candidates. For the Republican ballot, candidates were Robert Ferguson, Katie Caruso, David Feely, Frances Forbes, Fred Proper, Helen Cummiskey Schuster and Hiel Bartlett.
For the Democratic ballot, candidates were Proper, Forbes, Schuster, Caruso and Zachary Ware.
For Mount Jewett council, there were nine Republican candidates seeking four 4-year terms — Francis Auriemmo Jr., Ona Paar, John Hayduk, Robin Engl-Taylor, Annie Jo Wolfe, Mike Wennerstrom, Jane Bernecky, Thomas Geer and Jesse Wagner.
