Punxsutawney claims District 9 track & field title
BROOKVILLE — Bradford girls finished in fifth place Friday with a score of 44 during District IX AAA track & field championships. Punxsutawney took home the title with a score of 97. St. Marys (97.5) was second; DuBois (61.5) third; Clearfield (55) fourth.
“The girls had their best performances of the season by far. The team attitude and effort were all you could ask for. We are a very young team that lost 80 percent of our district points from last season to graduation.
We knew this season was a rebuilding year but we are very happy with the development of the athletes this season. We have a bright future, and we know that we will continue to improve,” Bradford girls coach Larry Stillman said. “The highlight was Emma Pilon defending her district title from last year in the high jump. It came down to the last jump and she showed why she is a district champion with a clutch jump.
Coach Marasco did a great job guiding her to the win.
“Alyssa Mangold and Aliya Corignani had excellent performances. Alyssa was 2nd in the long jump with the 4th farthest jump in school history and had an excellent 100 hurdle race for 2nd. She also anchored our two sprint relays. Aliya had her best triple jump ever to finish 2nd and had a solid 300 hurdle race and in the 4 x 4. Olivia Funk finished 5th in 100 hurdle race with a personal best by a half second.
Bella Prince had a great senior district with a 4th place long jump best jump and as well as in the 100 and ran hard in both sprint relays. Grace Close made the finals in the triple jump with a personal best by a foot. Maranda Davis had her best 100 and Miley Swanson had a season best 800 by 6 seconds. Our 4 x 800 had their best race by over 20 seconds. Lillian Erickson medaled in the javelin for the 3rd straight year which is very hard to do.
“We say goodbye to our four seniors–Grace Close Eliana Curcio Lillian Erickson and Isabella Prince and wish them well,” Stillman continued. “I would like to thank our parents and Mr. Erickson for their support, and also our manager, Mady Stark. On behalf of Coach Kelley and Coach Marasco we thank the girls for all their hard work and we want to congratulate Coach Tessena, Coach Faulkner and Coach Cercone and the boys team on a hard fought and exciting victory.”
