The Zonta Club of Bradford has awarded its Ruth B. Fisher Scholarship to four outstanding young ladies who will soon graduate from Bradford Area High School. This year, the club is awarding four recipients $1,000 each. They are Lillian Erickson, Isabella Prince, Isabella Rhoades and Lily Wells.
The club also recognized this year’s recipient of the Zonta Club Bradford — Pitt-Bradford Scholarship, which is an endowed scholarship that the club established at UPB in 2003. The scholarship is for students who reside in McKean County.
The winner is chosen by the staff of UPB. This year’s $1,000 scholarship winner is Andrea Wurster. She is a senior majoring in exercise science.
Students were recognized at a luncheon held at UPB in the Mukaiyama University Room.
The Ruth B. Fisher Scholarship is awarded yearly to worthy seniors who have officially been accepted into an accredited institution of higher learning. Ruth B. Fisher was a Bradford native and active member of the Zonta Club for 23 years.
Upon her death in 1978, she named Zonta Club of Bradford as beneficiary of her estate. With her generous bequest, Zonta Club leaders established this memorial scholarship. The criteria for the scholarship is in keeping with the mission of Zonta International, which empowers women through service and advocacy by providing financial assistance to qualified women who are seeking promising career opportunities.
Erickson will attend the University of Vermont to major in conservation biology.
Prince has been accepted to Gannon University where she will major in the pre-med program. She will also continue her athletic career in soccer there. Rhoades will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania to major in finance. She will also be a student athlete, as part of the IUP swim team.
Wells will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to major in radiologic sciences.
“These young women all have outstanding accomplishments in academics, community service, school activities, volunteerism and work ethic. Their personal goals are lofty and geared toward making a difference in their community and world,” Zonta representatives said.
