INDIANAPOLIS (TNS) — The Pirates announced a series of changes to their major and minor league coaching staffs Friday afternoon, as Chris Truby and Gene Lamont are joining the Pirates’ major league coaching staff. The moves come one week after Don Kelly’s first game as the club’s new manager.
Truby started this season as the manager for Triple-A Indianapolis. He was also serving as the organization’s minor league infield coordinator, a title he has held over the past four seasons. A former big-league infielder, Truby joins the Pirates’ staff with no specific title. Per the team’s release, he will work with the infielders at the major league level. He is expected to join the team Friday in Philadelphia.
Lamont, meanwhile, joins the major league staff as a special advisor to Kelly. This marks Lamont’s third stint with the Pirates. He first served as an assistant on Jim Leyland’s staff from 1986 through 1991 and then again in 1996. He then served as the team’s manager from 1997 through 2000. Lamont will join the Pirates next week, when they return to PNC Park for a seven game homestand.
Along with the two new additions, third base coach Mike Rabello’s role has been expanded. His new role will come with “increased responsibilities in game planning and in-game strategy,” per the team’s release.
Shawn Bowman, who began the 2025 season as the organization’s assistant director, coaching and player development/ minor league field coordinator, will take over as the manager for Triple-A Indianapolis.
