Gary Farr Sr.
ELDRED — Gary Allen Farr Sr. of Indian Creek Road, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grand-father, passed away at home Wednesday, April 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
Gary was born in Corning, N.Y., on June 5, 1944, a son of the late Rex and Peg Landon Farr. On Jan. 2, 1966, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann (Dottie) Swanson, who survives. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past January.
He attended school in the Otto-Eldred School District. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1962 to 1968, afterward going to work for Dresser Rand in Olean, N.Y., for 40 years.
He was assistant fire chief and chief of the Eldred Township Fire Department. Gary was a member of Eldred United Methodist Church, Eldred Conservation Club and Olean Bowling League. He was instrumental in getting the Little League baseball franchise for Eldred Township kids and helped build a park for them to play ball in. Gary loved fishing, hunting, boating and bowling in his younger years.
In addition to his loving wife, Dottie, Gary is survived by his children, Tina (Doug) Young of Belfast, N.Y., Tamala (Joe) Vaughn of Eldred, Rex (Tracey) Farr II of Eldred and Gary (Tiffany) Farr Jr. of Rixford; his perfect grandchildren, Nick (Danielle) Goetz of Mount Jewett, Ashley (Ryan) Hatch of Olean, N.Y., Andrew Farr of Olean, Matthew (Spryce) Vaughn of Eldred, Dakota (Laura) Vaughn of Duke Center, Wyatt (Morgan) Farr of Duke Center and Hailey Farr of Rixford; and his great-grandchildren who, for Gary, can walk on water, Orson Hatch, Zoe and Zella Mae Goetz and Bella and Bailey Vaughn; his sisters, Diane (Carl) Sleight and Cindy (Dan) Manning; many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Gregg Dunback; and brother-inlaw Jim (Jodi) Swanson.
In addition to his parents, Rex and Peg, he was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Finley Rae Hatch; a brother, Warren (Butch) Farr; a sister, Linda Haberer; a brother-inlaw, Douglas Swanson; a sister-in-law, Nancy Dombeck, and her husband, Bob; nephews, Jim, Patrick and Steven Swanson; and a niece, Kathy Mitchell.
Per Gary’s wishes, there will be a family gathering in his memory at a later date.
