From oil changes to brotherhood: Local men to gather at ‘Forge Night’

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, the parking lot of Open Arms Community Church, 71 Congress St., won’t just be full of cars — it’ll be full of men learning how to take care of them.

It’s part of an ongoing initiative called Forge Nights, hosted by Tribe of Lions, a men’s microchurch rooted in discipleship, brotherhood and mission — and supported by Manlihood, a nationally recognized men’s movement and podcast.

Forge Nights are exactly what they sound like: men gathering to be forged — strengthened — by learning and doing. In May, that means practical skills every man should know, like basic car maintenance. Veteran mechanic Brian Mahaney will lead the session, but the real power of the night lies in the shared knowledge and hands-on learning between the men.

“This isn’t a lecture in a garage, or a sermon in a church,” says Josh Hatcher, founder of Manlihood and leader of Tribe of Lions. “It’s a chance for men to show up, roll up their sleeves and learn from each other. Whether you know how to change your oil or you’ve never opened your hood — we’re going to learn together.”

This upcoming Forge Night will cover foundational automotive skills — from checking fluids to jump-starting a dead battery. The event is free, open to men and teen boys, and requires no prior experience.

Tribe of Lions meets regularly for Bible study and faith-based brotherhood, but Forge Nights intentionally offer a space where faith and community meet without pressure.

“Nobody’s preaching at anybody,” Hatcher adds. “We believe that men grow when they’re doing something meaningful side by side. Sometimes that means studying scripture. Sometimes that means learning how to keep your car running. Both matter.”

Forge Nights are held monthly, with future events already planned, including a self-defense seminar in June and other practical skill sessions throughout the year.

The Forge Nights series is part of a broader collaboration with Manlihood, Hatcher’s online men’s movement and podcast, which has racked up nearly 1 million downloads and featured guests ranging from Victor Marx and Jim Shockey to Dr. John Delony and Judge Joe Brown.

“Our goal is simple,” says Hatcher. “To help men become better men — and to do it in community.”
