Popular car brand recalls nearly 600k vehicles in U.S.
(TNS) — General Motors is recalling 721,000 SUVs and trucks worldwide due to an engine failure issue that could cause the vehicles to “lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the recall notice.
The Detroit, Michigan, automaker is recalling 2021-24 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles with 6.2L V8 gas engines.
GM said that the “connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components in these vehicles may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.”
The popular car brand identified 12 crashes and injuries in the U.S. that could be related to these engine issues. The car dealer will inspect the customer’s engine to determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced.
Vehicles that pass the inspection will be given a higher viscosity oil, which includes a new fill cap, oil filter replacement, and a new owner’s manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge.
In January 2025, GM opened a product investigation following a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This included 877,710 GM vehicles with the V8 engine. The recall was then announced on April 29.
GM has closed three prior investigations into the issue since 2022, based on the available safety field information. The brand identified 28,102 field complaints or incidents in the U.S. that were potentially related to the L87 engine “due to crankshaft, connecting rod, or engine bearing failure, of which 14,332 involved allegations of loss of propulsion,” the recall said.
Dealers were notified about the recall on April 24, and car owner notifications will begin on June 9.
