May programs throughout Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex
MOUNT JEWETT — Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex will offer a variety of programs in May.
Kinzua Bridge State Park 11 a.m. May 3, Exploring Spring Ephemerals — Stroll along the main park area to look for spring wildflowers. Reflect on the beauty of the season.
Meet in front of the visitor center.
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
May 4, Park Scavenger Hunt — In a fun game of scavenger hunt bingo, participants will be given a bingo sheet to explore the visitor center museum and park environment to look for objects described on your bingo card. Start at the visitor center classroom.
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4, Tales of the Tornado — Understand the collapse of the Kinzua viaduct like never before by reading eye-witness statements from construction workers who were working in the park on July 21, 2003, when an F1 tornado caused the structure’s collapse. Learn about the severe weather they experienced and the destruction they saw while viewing historical photographs of the structure and storm damage. Meet in the visitor center classroom.
7:30 to 9 p.m. May 10, Frog Songs at Sunset — Take a guided walk near the vernal pools on the General Kane Trail. View egg masses and tadpoles while helping staff to look for more vernal pool wildlife. Meet staff in the overflow parking lot; visitors are encouraged to wear boots and bug spray. This program will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
11 a.m. May 11, Mother’s Day Walk — Celebrate Mother’s Day with a wildflower walk at the park. Meet in front of the visitor center. Dress for the weather.
1 p.m. May 17, PA Native Species Walk — Commemorate PA Native Species Day, a few days early, by exploring Kinzua Bridge State Park to look for native species.
Discover some of the invasive plants as well, and help pull them out.
Meet in front of the visitor center. Dress for the weather. Bug spray and gloves are suggested.
11 a.m. May 18, Intro to Archery — Practice archery skills in a safe and fun environment.
Staff will cover the necessary safety procedures of shooting a bow, as well as the technical skills involved in hitting a target. Target and bows provided. This program is free and open to the public. Meet on the eastern side of the building.
11 a.m. May 26, Ask the Naturalist — The park naturalist will rove around the park to answer questions about nature and history.
Noon May 26, Memorial Day Tribute: The Reading of Special Order #11 — To commemorate Memorial Day, join us for a brief history about “Remembrance Day” and the reading of a portion of Special Order #11. Meet outside the visitor center near the flag.
Bendigo State Park Noon to 4 p.m. May 17, Remake Learning Days: Birding for Beginners — Learn a new hobby that you can do from the comfort of your own backyard; join DCNR staff near the pool and picnic area for an introduction to birding, and binocular use. Take a quick lesson on how to use a pair of binoculars and then walk the park to practice it yourself on the songbirds, raptors and waterfowl that frequent this area. Learn how to utilize popular birding apps like Merlin to make birding easier and more accessible. A limited number of binoculars will be available for use, but participants are encouraged to bring a pair if they have them. This program will be canceled in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Noon to 3 p.m. May 24, Stream Scoop! — Want to hear the scoop about the stream remediation project happening at Bendigo State Park this fall? Stop by the pop-up table near the pool and playground area. Learn how the project will benefit stream life, the ecosystem and humans alike. This program will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 25, Women’s Learn to Fish Day — Learn proper casting, knot tying and what fish eat, then try your luck at fishing in the East Branch of the Clarion River. Time permitting, there will be a hike on the Eagle Trail to check out the Eastern hemlocks, a trout’s friend. Water and snacks provided by Trout Unlimited. Register for this free event by calling (814) 778-5467.
Meet at pavilion 2 behind the pool. Dress for the weather. Bring your own bug spray and sunscreen.

Elk State Park Noon to 2 p.m. May 18, Spring Birding on Maple Trail — Take a relaxing springtime walk on Maple Trail with a pair of binoculars to spot birds around East Branch Lake.
Bring your own or borrow a pair from DCNR staff.
Pick up a bird identification guide at the start of the trail to help along the way and hear from staff about free birding apps that make the hobby even more accessible. Meet at the start of Maple Trail near the Army Corps Boat Launch.
