DUCKS
DUCKS: Did you know that April has a Birth Month Bird? We can’t remember where we found the information, but we did note that the duck was the bird in question.
We found a website with duck facts for kids at twinkl.com ‘Ducks are omnivores, which means they eat a variety of different things, including plants and other animals. In the wild, they will usually eat fish eggs, aquatic plants, small fish, worms and insects.
‘If you want to feed your local ducks, bread actually isn’t the best option. Try feeding them duck pellets, oats, frozen peas, lettuce or seeds!’
‘When ducks clean themselves, it is called ‘preening.’ They put their heads into funny positions and use their bills to clean between their feathers.
‘Most duck eggs hatch within 28 days.
Ducklings can fly within 5 to 8 weeks of hatching ‘Ducks waddle because of their webbed feet! They cannot feel cold in their feet because their feet have no nerves or blood vessels.
There are different types of ducks — diving ducks and dabbling ducks. The differences include the way the ducks feed — the diving duck dives beneath the surface of the water, while the dabbling duck feeds at the surface.
‘They are outgoing and social animals that like to be in groups.
They can live up to 20 years, if they are well cared for. They lay more eggs when there is more daylight.
‘Ducks have three eyelids and can see in color.’ One eyelid is to protect their eye while underwater.
Ducks have a special gland that produces oil to waterproof their feathers. And they have good senses — smell, hearing, taste, balance, coordination, memory, social behavior and communication.
