FOOD: Since the advent of Food Network and shows about culinary travel, most people know to get a beignet in New Orleans, a bagel in NYC, deep dish pizza in Chicago, and lobster rolls in Boston.
Interestingly,
Bradford seems to be on the same palette as Buffalo,
N.Y., with its go-to favorites.
Beef on week — we must confess that we hadn’t realized this was a regional thing. It might have been a Food Network show that clued us in that the rest of the world wasn’t attuned to this culinary masterpiece.
We’re sure most people know the story that chicken wings were invented in Buffalo — well, the wings themselves came on the chicken, but wings with the popular hot sauce came from Buffalo. The Anchor Bar is still there and still selling loads of wings.
There’s Buffalostyle pizza, too, an amalgam of Chicago deep dish and the New York thin slice.
We looked around for a better description. It’s a thicker crust with a spongy texture with a richer, sweeter sauce, whole milk mozzarella, cup-and-char pepperoni and a list of specialty pizzas longer than most.
Sponge candy is a regional thing, too. The light, crunchy toffee is made in a ‘sponge belt’ in Northern Pennsylvania and Western New York.
How about peanut sticks? It’s a donut log covered in chopped peanuts.
Chicken finger subs, too, seem to be regional fare.
Hmm, we’re starting to get hungry.
Sometimes the best part of traveling is to ask a local for dining recommendations, and what their favorite food is. And if you’re in the South, it’s not a bald peanut they’re talking about, it’s a boiled peanut.
They swear it’s a tasty snack, they just don’t pronounce all of its syllables.
