A Look at the Elite 8: O-E faces Aquinas

The Quarterfinals of the 2025 Class 1A Boys’ Basketball Playoffs are scheduled for this evening. Four games played tonight over the course of four hours will determine the remaining four teams. Those teams will play in the Semifinals on Friday, March 21, with the winners advancing to play at the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
Below, we take a look at today’s games, with special interest given to the Otto-Eldred Terrors, who represent District 9 and are the solo remaining public school in the playoffs.
We also give a nod to the 6:30 p.m. matchup, which pits two teams against each other that have the unique distinction of having advanced by knocking two of our local teams out of contention.
Today’s Games: The Christian Academy vs Lancaster Country Day (at Coatesville HS, 5 p.m.)
The Christian Academy in Brookhaven has a record of 12-10 and 9th in conference with a record of 5-7. They are ranked 319th in PA.
Christian Academy claimed a 66-48 win over High Point Baptist in the PIAA Second Round to advance. They defeated Liguori Academy 66-41 to advance from the First Round.
Lancaster Country Day in Lancaster is 13-11 overall and 6-4 in conference, which ranks them second. They hold a rank of 297 in PA.
Lancaster Day defeated Phil-Mont Christian 56-53 in the Second Round to advance, following a victory over North Penn Liberty 57-46 in the first round.
Otto-Eldred vs Aquinas Academy (at Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie, 6 p.m.)
Otto-Eldred is our local favorite from Duke Center. The Terrors’ record is 27-1 overall and 16-0, giving them top rank in their conference as well. They are ranked 88th in PA.
The Terrors bring three 1,000-point scorers, including Landon Francis who had scored 1,729 points as of game’s end on Friday, March 7th. That point total was enough to bump him to the top of Otto-Eldred’s 1,000-point scorers list. Since then, he’s added 24 more in the victory over Serra Catholic Tuesday in Clarion.
O-E’s Manning Splain and Shene Thomas have also celebrated the 1,000-point milestone this season. Splain scored 10 points Tuesday, while Thomas added 15.
Aquinas Academy is located in Gibsonia. They are 16-6 overall and 4-2 in conference, ranking them second. They are ranked 162 in PA.
The Crusaders have Jake Guillen, who scored 24 points in a game against Geibel Catholic in late February and 36 points against Erie First Christian in a March PIAA Class A first round game.
They also have Sam Duer, who posted 14 points in the game against Geibel Catholic, while Jonah Burchill added 11 points. During the game with Erie First Christian, Duer put up 18 points and David Zaharko scored 12.
LaAcademia Charter vs The Neighborhood Academy (at Altoona HS, 6:30 p.m.)
These two teams will be quite the matchup — and they hold special interest for our readers, as they both knocked out teams from our coverage area to secure their spot in the Elite Eight.
LaAcademia Charter, located in Lancaster, has a record of 14-13 overall and is ranked 259th in PA.
The Leones are coming off back-to-back wins, one of those a 65-55 OT victory over Cameron County Tuesday at Bald Eagle Area HS.
Neighborhood Academy, located in Pittsburgh, is 26-1 overall and 10-0 in conference, giving them top rank. They are ranked 25th in PA.
The Bulldogs defeated ECC on Tuesday in Clarion, with a score of 63-44. NA’s Courtney Wallace also celebrated a new milestone, surpassing 2,000 points scored while playing on the court in Tippin Gymnasium.
Sankofa Freedom Academy vs. Chester Charter (at West Philadelphia HS, 7:30 p.m.)
Sankofa Freedom Academy, in Philadelphia, is 17-10 overall and 7-6 in conference, with a rank of fourth. (94th in PA) The Warriors defeated Bethlehem Christian (75-66) in the Second Round to advance, following a win over York Country Day (67-36) in the First Round.
Chester Charter Scholars Academy, located in Chester, is 24-5 overall and 14-1 in conference, which makes them second. They are ranked 80th in PA.
The Sabers defeated Shalom Christian Academy (69-55) in the Second Round after winning over Ephrata Mennonite (64-40) in the First Round.
