TIDBITS: A few readers have reached out recently to share some tidbits.

We’ll relay the not-so-good item first.

It just so happens that today, March 6, is “Slam the Scam Day,” designated by the Social Security Administration and its Office of the Inspector General to raise awareness about government impostor scams, especially those related to Social Security benefits. Part of the Federal Trade Commission’s National Consumer Protection Week, the observance aims to encourage folks to be vigilant against fraudulent activity.

A reader called the Era newsroom this week to tell us about a phone call he received, from a man purporting to be from Publishers Clearing House.

He initially missed the call but dialed the number back and the man “had the nerve” to answer, “Publishers Clearing House.”

But, our savvy reader knew that PCH does not call its winners of major prizes. They notify them by showing up unannounced at their front door with the renowned PCH Prize Patrol.

PCH might, for smaller prizes, send news via mail or email, but it does not call.

If there are no balloons, champagne or giant check, it’s most likely a scam.

Now for the tremendous tidbit.

Polly Dehner reached out to say she saw two robins Wednesday morning, at her home on West Washington Street. Robins are migratory birds and return to their breeding grounds each spring, an annual harbinger of warmer weather.
