Chiefs pass rusher emerges as sleeper option for Steelers
(TNS) — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ focus on the defensive line, either in the NFL Draft or free agency, seems likely in the coming weeks. General manager Omar Khan preached the value of adding the defensive line and just how important adding to that room can be.
That all comes to a head with some big names hitting the open market in just six days. Most will point to Dallas’ Osa Odighizuwa, Philadelphia’s Milton Williams, or even former Steelers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.
However, Chiefs defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton might be the most underrated option. The 26-year-old set a career-high of 6.5 sacks in his contract year, and the Chiefs could look to re-sign him. Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports believes Wharton should have a strong market.
“DT Tershawn Wharton is a name who could exceed expectations in free agency next week. Coming off an 8.5-sack season (including playoffs), the 26-year-old is in his prime and brings versatility as both a pass rusher and run defender— all traits teams covet. The interior DL market has been active, with several teams showing interest in Wharton, among other available names,” Schultz wrote.
Wharton will get paid a lot of money, but the Steelers have the money to dish it out. If they wanted to lessen the defensive line need, especially if they have their eye on a wide receiver in the first round, signing someone like Wharton would go a long way.
Of course, the Steelers look primed to add a defensive lineman early in the NFL Draft anyway, so even with an addition like Wharton, they could land someone like Kenneth Grant or Derrick Harmon.
