The Bradford Women’s Literary Club met Friday at Togi’s Blue room for the club’s election day luncheon. Carol Shannon opened the meeting and Cindy Benedict did the blessing.
The speakers for the meeting were Brett Butler, Bradford fire chief and deputy fire chief Jeff Kloss. The gentlemen gave a brief bio of themselves and described the fire department and their duties. During their talk they promoted what all the department does for the public. Promotion of the 911 dispatch was very evident of that facility’s importance to assist the fireman. One such item is the ability to FaceTime in some instances of calls to 911. They have the ability to ping cellphones that assist the helpers to give assistance. They stressed calling 911 when the caller is out of the house.
They gave some more tips such as one should have their bedroom door closed while sleeping to ensure that a fire would face a barrier until the occupants can get out. Caution while using space heaters was stressed, especially during these cold days. Keep paper and cardboard safely away from the space heaters. Use a hair dryer while thawing frozen pipes. They promoted the use of fire blankets, especially for kitchen fires.
The officers also mentioned the ambulance calls they provide and to make sure one has their cellphones with them in case of a fall. Many times the police will make the scene before the fire department can get there. They are a vital part of protecting the community in these instances. They offered that the 911 Center has a non-emergency number the public can use for those times when they need assistance in circumstances, but it is not an emergency. The number is (814) 887-4911.
They advised the members to replace fire detectors after 10 years and to place carbon monoxide detectors on a higher level.
The Literary Club had their elections for the officers for next year: President, Carol Shannon; Vice President, Holly Puglio; Secretary, Linda Gault; Corresponding Secretary, Mary Lou Detweiler; Treasurer, Bonnie Frisina; Assistant Treasurer, Vera Cloud. Board of Directors added, Cindy Benedict, Martha Torrey, Carol Ryan and Karen Buchheit.
The Literary Club will meet next on Friday at Hill Memorial Church. Bonnie Leposa of the Bradford Area Public Library will speak about the children’s programming at the library.
