UNIVERSITY PARK — Aimed at children who enjoy animals and are interested in learning more about common farm animals and dogs, Penn State Extension is offering a day camp for children ages 8 to 12 that will focus on hands-on experiences related to animal agriculture.
The camp will occur 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 7 to 11 at the Snider Agricultural Arena on Penn State’s University Park campus in State College.
This camp will teach children about the role animals play in food production. They will learn about where their food comes from and about animal science.
Children can engage in activities at the Snider Agricultural Arena and go on tours of the Penn State dairy, equine, beef and sheep barns. Participants also can tour the Penn State Berkey Creamery and eat ice cream produced with milk from the Penn State dairy herd.
Youth will learn about topics such as what animals eat, the properties and uses of wool, poultry species and egg properties, how livestock producers protect their animals from disease, how to milk a cow, and how to identify animals. They also will learn about dog safety and can make an enriching toy for their dog. Participants will make a craft that they can enter at their local county fair.
Parents can register their children online.
