Monday’s meeting of Bradford City Council didn’t take long, but the decisions made were impactful.
Council passed on second reading the budget and millage ordinances, including a tax increase of .47 mills. Mayor Tom Riel said in November when the budget was introduced that rising costs are to blame.
“The city has seen significant increases in the past five years as most of you have seen in your own personal lives,” the mayor said. He explained some of the rising costs for the city were employee wage increases, insurance costs, utilities, outside costs, maintenance and equipment.
Council members also approved an ordinance that gives zoning permission for infill housing within the city, and an ordinance raising garbage rates by $1.50 per month.
A full house of family and friends were on hand at council chambers for promotions in the city’s fire department. Council amended the contract with the Local 655 International Association of Fire Fighters to allow for a position of deputy chief, and appointed Jeff Kloss to that position. Chris Salerno was appointed a lieutenant within the department, and Andrew Piganelli was appointed to a full-time position within the department.
The council members also appointed Karen Costello-Pecht to executive director of the Office of Economic and Community Development, a position for which she has been training with Sara Andrews, who has been working on a contractual basis with the city.
“We wish nothing but the best for you, Karen,” said Riel. “We’re very impressed with your performance.”
In other business, the city approved applying for a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant of $26,000. The funds, if received, would be used for turnout gear and a washer and dryer.
Council set meeting dates for the coming year, to be held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6 p.m. Board of Health meetings will be held, as needed, at 5 p.m. every Tuesday.
A stipend of $8,000 was authorized for John Peterson, acting as zoning officer for the city.
