VFW Post 212 and Frances Sherman VFWA has announced the winners of its 2024-2025 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests.
The Voice of Democracy essay winners are as follows: in first place, Baylee Rayne Ratzel, who has advanced to District 19 judging. She is a 16-year-old Bradford Area High School student whose parents are Adrianne Ratzel and Everett Ratzel. She is an active member of BAHS’ student lighthouse as well as a volunteer worker. She spends her extra time working or doing homework for AP courses. She enjoys writing, drawing and crocheting.
Second place was Mackenzie Johnston, daughter of Joe Johnston, and lives in Little Meadows, Pa. Mackenzie is a senior at Montrose Jr/Sr High School where she participates in archery and volleyball. Upon graduation her sights are set on attending college to pursue a degree in environmental science.
Third place was 3rd Place Andrew Ratzel, a 17-year-old student at Bradford High and son of Adrianne Ratzel and Everett Ratzel. Andrew enjoys his cats at home.
For the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest, first place went to Lilly Mascioni, who advanced to District 19 judging and placed 3rd at District level.
Lilly is the 11-year-old daughter of Andy and Kara Mascioni. She is an avid reader, loves music and singing as well. She plays piano, clarinet and guitar. She participates in softball, dance, theater and skiing. Lilly dreams of being an author one day as well as a doctor or lawyer.
In second place was Kennedy Simon, a 12-year-old 7th grader at Lowville Academy in Lowville, N.Y. She is the daughter of a Post 212 Life Member, Kristy Auman. Kennedy has a passion for both academics and athletics. When she’s not playing with her school’s volleyball team, she is spending time with her horses. She enjoys riding and honing her equestrian skills. Kennedy’s commitment and energy shine.
In third place was Hunter Brandt, a 12-year-old seventh grader, the son of Kyle and Katie Brandt. He’s trained at Miller’s Kenpo Karate Dojo for 8 years. Hunter enjoys hunting, fishing and volunteer work.
Awards will be presented Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. prior to VFW Post 212’s meeting. Families are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments provided for those in attendance.
