PASR-McKean
The McKean County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees met Oct. 30 at the Port Allegany Veterans Memorial Inc. with 42 in attendance. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, President Connie King welcomed everyone and thanked Peg Kallenborn for arranging the meeting and selecting the menu. A fall atmosphere with decorations was enjoyed by all.
The COLA was discussed with a reminder that the House of Representatives passed their part of the bill. It is hoped that the Senate will meet soon and pass their part of the bill. The John Dillon Award was presented to Cyndee Smith from Port Allegany, a long-time local member and caller for the Smethport members. She is a lunch organizer, money taker, on SSMHF committee, and very community minded.
Francene Imbrogno, secretary, read the minutes of the last April 24 meeting, which were approved. The treasurer’s report, given by Char Stoughton, was accepted. The next meeting is on April 30, 2025, in Bradford. It was announced that one or two members are needed to secure a place and catering for this meeting. Please let C. King know as soon as possible who is doing this. Also, Connie King accepted the presidency for two more years.
In community service, Stoughton reminded everyone to let her know your total volunteer hours in the community. The local membership is 190. Dues are still $5. If your dues were not paid this 2024 year, King will send you a reminder in the mail soon. A thank you was read from Adriana Campogiani, the 2024 Bradford scholarship recipient. Please let the SSMHF committee know if there is someone ill or in the hospital in your area.
The Education Support Mini-grant this year went to Smethport Elementary School. Ms. K. Zona. principal, indicated the funds would be used for the creation of a “STOR” (student treasures or resources) room for students in need of basic hygiene products, clothing, shoes, bookbags, or non-perishable food items.
The program was the McKean Co. 911 System. The speakers were Stephanie Scrivo, 911 Coordinator, and Nate Burgett, director of emergency services. They presented information on how they became interested in this line of work, their qualifications, the work of the dispatchers, and how the counties work together in an emergency. All the 911 team personnel learn a wealth of county information as to the route numbers of the roads, what fire/police/ambulance departments are in the area, and basic coordination. Their program was very interesting and well received by their attentive audience. We all appreciated their coming and to learn of this vital service in our community. A packet of brochures was available for the taking.
Norm King gave the invocation. In addition, he won the 50/50 and donated it back to the Social Services Fund. Thank you to Ray Brzezinski for so faithfully doing the tickets.
A delicious ham dinner with a potato casserole was served at noon by the Vets Memorial ladies.
