NEW BETHLEHEM — Redbank Valley junior quarterback Braylon Wagner had a hand in four of Redbank Valley’s six touchdowns in a 42-6 win over Cameron County in the District 9 Class 1A quarterfinals.
Wagner led the No. 2 and defending D9 champion Bulldogs (8-3) with, had two touchdown passes, a touchdown run and returned an interception for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to key the charge past the No. 7 Red Raiders (6-4).
The only scoring in the first quarter came at the 2:26 mark, as Wagner connected with Rylan Rupp on a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.
Wagner made it 14-0 on the first play of the second quarter, breaking free for a 59-yard touchdown run.
That score looked as if it may hold into halftime, but that wasn’t the case. Wagner’s 64-yard touchdown pass to Rupp set up Jaxon Huffman’s 1-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 with eight seconds left in the half. Wagner then stepped in front of a pass and took it the house with the clock showing zeroes, and just like that it was 28-0.
Wagner’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Breckin Minich put the running clock mercy rule into effect, and Drew Byers’ 30-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter put the finishing touches on the Redbank Valley scoring.
Ryder Brown scored on a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter for Cameron County.
With the win, Redbank Valley advances to play Union/A-C Valley, a 57-30 winner over Otto-Eldred in the semifinals next week at a site and time to be determined. The two teams met in the first game of the season, a 49-13 Redbank Valley win.
