HALLOWEEN: Are you a fan of Halloween? Is it the creepy, crawly and spooky that draws you, or the classics like Jack-o-lanterns, vampires and mummies?
You might not like it as much as an Altoona couple that runs the Castle Halloween Museum out of their home. Roadside America says “Chris Russell and Pamela Apkarian-Russell, ‘The Halloween Queen,’ have filled their home with over 35,000 Halloween objects. Open year-round, by appointment. Two-hour tour.”
It’s a huge Victorian brick house packed with old Halloween decorations, sculptures, artwork, arcade machines and even folk art. Online reviews say rooms in the house are dedicated to the Salem witch trials, Harry Potter and Nightmare Before Christmas. There’s a costume room and a room for games.
There’s no bloody, gory things, as The Halloween Queen focuses more on the history associated with the artwork involved. There are funeral hair wreaths, Day of the Dead decorations, movie posters, food packaging and so much more, dating from the 1890s to current.
The reviews all mention how knowledgeable the Halloween Queen is. And that she is an author, penning books on Halloween collectibles, Haunted America, holiday postcards and more. She’s been collecting for more than 50 years, and says her museum has had visitors from as far away as Japan and New Zealand.
Among the items in the museum are Halloween face jugs and interesting pieces of folk art that are filled with historical significance in African American culture. Some were used for practical purposes, while others were spiritual in nature, buried outside front and back doors to ward off spirits.
There are carnival pieces in the museum, like Zoltar, the fortune teller, and a carousel — but those sure aren’t horses on it.
Sounds like it’s worth the trip.
