MOUNT JEWETT — Weekend events have been set at Kinzua Bridge and Elk state parks.
On Saturday, the park educator will be leading Pedal the Plateau, beginning at 10 a.m. The Knox & Kane Rail Trail is a great place to ride a bike and enjoy nature. Bring your bike and join a park educator for a ride from the park to Mount Jewett and back. Helmets are required and participants should expect to bike about 8 miles on a flat crushed gravel surface. A safety talk will be held prior to the ride. Meet at the Knox & Kane Trailhead near the skywalk. Bring your own water.
At 2 p.m. Saturday will be a Leave No Trace Trek. Staff will guide a hike down the Kinzua Creek Trail to learn Leave No Trace ethics. Hear the seven principles and put them into practice on the trail. Understand your impact and learn how to be more environmentally friendly while enjoying the great outdoors. Meet near the observation deck. This event will be postponed in the event of severe weather.
At 10 a.m. Sunday will be an Ask the Naturalist program. The park naturalist will be roving the main park area to answer questions.
At Elk State Park, a Nature Walk on Maple Trail will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Join staff for an afternoon stroll to take in the beautiful lakeside scenery at Maple Trail, a very easy, flat, 0.5-mile trail that begins at the parking lot near the Army Corp Boat Launch. Participants should dress for the weather and bring along any water they may need. This program will be postponed in the event of severe weather.
