For the first time this season, there wasn’t a playoff in the Division I boys’ group of the Penn-York Junior Golf League.
There was also a new name at the top of the leaderboard.
Michael Peterson (Allegany-Limestone/Bartlett CC) carded a 76 at Pine Acres on Monday to take first. Peterson was the lone golfer to shoot below 80, with quick greens factoring into higher overall scoring.
“I felt really good today,” Peterson said. “The greens were really quick, especially if you were above the hole. If you’re above the hole, you’d try and get it started and it would roll a mile by, so I stayed below the hole most of the day.”
Peterson shot a 39 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine.
Phinn Chamberlain (Kane) finished second with an 82. It’s the second consecutive week Chamberlain came in second place, after going to a playoff against Griffin Nelson (Cardinal Hills) last week.
Nelson had three consecutive first place finishes to begin the Penn-York season, with all of them coming in a playoff. He finished fourth at Pine Acres with an 84, while Owen Wright (Cardinal Hills) was third with an 83.
“Right now, off the tee is a big strength),” Peterson said. “I’ve been keeping it in the fairway for the most part. I’ve been keeping it in play really well. Two stroke penalties OB (out of bounds) really kill a round. I haven’t hit a ball OB all Penn-York. And I’ve been working on chipping a lot, getting balls up and down and making pars that way. Scrappy pars. That’s some of what I’ve been doing to help my scores get lower.”
There was also a new first-place finisher in the girls’ Division I, as Sophie Bartman (Bartlett) shot a 41 on nine holes.
“I played the course a couple of days ago and it was very difficult,” Bartman said. “The greens are really fast and break a ton. You have to make sure you keep it inbound.”
Bartman edged Reiley Lineman (Pennhills), who finished second with a 44.
“With the bunkers being drop-free zones, it’s a little bit easier,” Bartman said. “I don’t have to worry about them quite as much.”
Bartman’s score reflects a steady improvement over the summer.
“I’ve definitely gotten better,” Bartman said. “The first Penn-York match I did not play very well. It’s gone a lot better as the summer has gone on. I’ve kept the ball in bounds, not having to take penalty strokes, and have had fewer three-putts.”
In the boys’ Division II, Matthew Beaver made it a perfect 4-for-4, shooting a 79, six shots clear of second-place finisher Cam Bartman (Bartlett), who carded an 85.
Beaver’s 79 was one stroke better than the 80 he shot last week at Wellsville Country Club.
In Division III boys’, Deater Martin of Smethport picked up his first win, shooting a 44 on nine holes. Donovan Palumbo (Emporium) was second with a 46 and Colton Lineman (Pennhills) third with a 49.
In Division IV boys, Kaysen Beaver (Cardinal Hills) and Keegan Smith (Bavarian Hills) both shot 37, with Beaver winning on the second playoff hole with a par.
Division III girls saw Kennedy Honeck (Bartlett) shooting a 62, as did Molly Leslie (Bartlett). Honeck claimed first after one playoff hole.
Playing from the modified tees, Jossalyn Pentz (Eagles Ridge) shot a 46 to win for the fourth straight week.
The final stop of the season comes Monday, July 29th, at Bartlett Country Club.
