PA: We’ve got some more random facts about Pennsylvania to share.
Philadelphia’s infamous Eastern State Penitentiary had indoor plumbing and central heating before the White House did. The pen opened in 1829 as part of a “controversial movement to change the behavior of people convicted of crimes through ‘confinement in solitude with labor,’” and quickly became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the United States. It was last used in 1970-71 to house inmates from the county jail at Holmesburg, following a riot there.
It opened for public tours in 1988, and is known now as one of the most haunted places in the world.
Speaking of haunted, the exterior of the Harry Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe was the inspiration for the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World. The mansion — in Jim Thorpe, that is — is open for events and also functions as a bed and breakfast.
Here’s a strange one: In 1943, the Steelers and Eagles formed a combined team because neither could field a full team due to World War II. The team was called the Steagles and they finished with a winning record, something the Eagles had yet to achieve.
And some more about Pittsburgh — The first complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever found is on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh.
Hugh J. Ward invented Bingo in Pittsburgh in the early 1920s. He originally called the game Beano and used beans as markers.
The highest point in Pennsylvania — Mount Davis at 3,213 feet — is at a lower elevation than the lowest point in the entire state of Colorado — 3,315 feet.
