ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Six new inductees took their places as part of the 45th induction class to the St. Bonaventure University Athletics Hall of Fame when the Class of 2024 was formally inducted: Michal Bogacki, ‘06 (men’s swimming), Peter Carr, ‘84 (men’s soccer), Stefanie Collins, ‘06 (women’s basketball), Dr. James Moor (men’s ice hockey), Naveen Singh, ‘94 (men’s tennis), and Rob Vartughian, ‘00 (men’s soccer). The induction ceremony was held as part of Alumni Reunion Weekend June 8, 2024 in the Quick Center for the Arts.
The new inductees joined 154 previous St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame honorees, continuing a tradition which dates to the inaugural induction class in 1969.
Michal Bogacki
Bogacki spent just two years at St. Bonaventure after transferring from Monroe Community College, but he left an indelible mark on the Bonnies swim program. He captured 11 medals at Atlantic 10 Championships – six gold and five silver – and was key to the team winning the 2006 A-10 Championship.
He turned in what longtime head coach Sean McNamee described as the “best and toughest” night of competition he has ever witnessed, leading a huge swing that helped the Bonnies secure the 2006 team title. Bogacki was the A-10 champion in the 200-freestyle that year and also won gold with the 400-medley relay. In the final race of the meet, the Bonnies led by one point over UMass when Bogacki teamed with Alex Moniot, Roman Margulis and Patrick Doret to win the 400-free relay with a time of 3:03.49 and secure the conference crown.
Bogacki also won silver in the 100-free and 200-butterfly that year as well as in the 200-free relay.
The previous year, the Bonnies came up one spot short of an Atlantic 10 title when Bogacki took the individual title in the 200-free while also winning gold in the 200-free relay and 400-medley relay. He also won silver in the 200-fly and 400-free relay in his first year with the program.
A standout in the classroom as well, the native of Poland was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team in 2006.
Peter Carr
Carr suited up for the Bonnies men’s soccer team between 1980-83 and today remains one of the top offensive producers in program history.
He graduated as the Bonnies’ leading scorer and currently remains third in the program history book with 74 total points – a total that ranks behind only Brad Wolf, ‘85, and Joe Trabold, ‘86, who are both Hall of Fame members.
Carr’s 34 goals also are third in school history.
In 1982, he helped the Bonnies to the program record for season wins with 12, a mark that still stands today, as he found the back of the net 14 times, four of them game-winners.
The Syracuse native led the team in scoring in three of his seasons – 1980, ‘81 and ‘83 – during one of the program’s most successful periods. During his four-year career, the Bonnies registered 32 wins, highlighted by a 12-6 campaign during his junior season of ‘82 and a 9-8-1 finish in his senior campaign of 1983. In 1982, Bona got off to an 11-1 start, still the best in program history.
A team captain who was hailed as a skillful, unselfish player who was a leader on and off the field while a student-athlete, Carr will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame as part of his 40th class reunion.
Stefanie Collins
Collins first left her mark on the Bonnies women’s basketball program record books and since her graduation has made a splash on the global level.
She joined the Bonnies after being named New York’s Class D Player of the Year in 2001 at Odessa-Montour High School and made an immediate splash on campus when she averaged over 11 points per contest as a freshman to be crowned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.
As a sophomore, she ranked third nationally in three-point percentage (.466) while averaging 16 points per game. She was not only her team’s top scorer but also its best defender and main ballhandler. After the season, she was on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams, a spot she would claim again the following year when she posted nearly 14 points per game.
Today, her name is seen throughout the program record books.
Collins stands 12th in career scoring (1,421 points), third in total 3-pointers (288), seventh in free throw percentage (.815), 10th in steals (148), and her 73 games of double-figure scoring is ninth-most in Bona’s history. She also ranks seventh, 10th, 11th and 15th in the ranks for single-season 3-pointers made. Her 36-point performance in a 2003 game at Stony Brook also is tied for third in school history.
Following her days at Bonaventure, she joined an elite list of Bonnies to qualify for Olympic competition. She played in the 2012 London Olympic Games with Great Britain, following the heritage of her mother, Janet, who is from England. Collins ultimately played more games for Great Britain’s national squad than any other player in history and helped the squad earn a fourth-place finish at the 2019 European Championships.
Dr. James Moor
A longtime political science professor at St. Bonaventure, Moor’s efforts with the hockey team provided the framework for Bona’s success on the ice during the 1980s.
Moor was instrumental to the construction of the St. Bonaventure varsity hockey program which played at the NCAA Division III level from 1981-93. He took over as the faculty moderator for the program in 1980 when it was club status, guiding the team to an International Collegiate Hockey League (ICHL) title to set the stage for a jump to the varsity level for the following year.
During the 1980s, the hockey program was the most successful on campus as Moor’s teams won four straight ICHL championships from 1982-86. When he retired in April 1986, he left with a career record of 102-57-6, far and away the best record for any Bonaventure hockey coach, and five league titles. During the playoffs, his teams had an 11-1 record.
In 1983, Bona posted a 17-10-2 record on the way to its ICHL crown and improved to 18-9 the following season while winning the conference regular season and tournament championships. In 1985, Bona won 20 games to finish with a 20-10 record en route to yet another ICHL championship.
Moor’s squad would record skate to a mark of 16-9-1 in 1986 to win the ICHL regular season and playoff championships once again in his final season as head coach.
Naveen Singh
Naveen Singh unquestionably put together one of the finest careers in Bonnies men’s tennis history, producing a career winning percentage of better than 75 percent.
He was the team’s No. 1 for the entirety of his career, beginning in 1991-92 when he played all but one match at the top spot in both singles and doubles. He went 15-6 in singles play that year while posting an 11-3 doubles record, teaming with Thiru Govender, a Class of 2007 Hall of Fame inductee.
As a freshman, he qualified for the ITA Rolex Invitational in both singles and doubles, something he would go on to do his entire Bonaventure career. That season, the Bonnies finished fifth in the Atlantic 10, their best standing to that point in the conference. SBU finished 13-12 that year and would never have a losing record during Singh’s career.
Singh would be key to Bona’s continued rise even as it saw increased competition with its first schedule against all Division I opponents in 1992-93. The Bonnies would produce an 11-3 team record that year, led by Singh who went 12-2 in singles play and 9-2 in doubles action. Bona did not lose a set in the first 27 matches of the year that season while Singh put on a dominating fall when he recorded a 36-game winning streak.
In 1993-94, Singh again dominated, going 14-5 in singles play and 14-5 in doubles, playing every match at the top spot. His Bonnies went 16-3 that year, setting a team record for wins, and won 53 of 54 possible points during an undefeated fall, ultimately finishing fifth in the A-10 once more.
In the fall of 1994 before his graduation, he would also become the first SBU player in six years to win at the ITA Rolex Invitational, defeating MAAC singles champion Brian McKeever of Manhattan, 6-1, 6-3. His Bona squad went a perfect 7-0 in his final season as a collegiate student-athlete.
Rob Vartughian
Rob Vartughian produced a career both as a student-athlete and a professional that puts him in rare company in Bona history.
A four-year goalkeeper for the Bonnies, he was key to one of the best stretches in program history. He was in net for three seasons of 10 or more wins including a 25-18-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play. From 1997-99, his Bonnies produced a mark of 32-22-1 overall including 22-11 in conference matches.
He graduated as the school’s leader in goals against average (1.71), a tally that stands second today. He ranks third in Bona career wins as well.
In his freshman season of 1996, Vartughian recorded 100 saves and appeared ready for a breakout campaign in 1997 when he went 2-1 with a 1.15 goals against average (GAA) and a shutout through four games before an injury derailed his season. He returned in 1998, logging a school-record eight shutouts while playing 1,578 of 1,589 possible minutes in net with a .671 save percentage and 1.60 GAA.
He was also in net and recorded a clean sheet for one of the program’s best-ever victories, scoring the win at North Carolina, 1-0, in 1998. In his senior season of 1999, the Bonnies posted their best record as an Atlantic 10 program, going 8-4 in conference, a school record that still stands.
During the 1999 campaign, he started all 20 games with a 1.87 GAA, 114 saves and four shutouts including a sparkling 1.24 GAA in A-10 play. He was named A-10 Player of the Week twice and also earned a spot on the 1999 A-10 Championship All-Tournament Team as well as the All-Academic Team.
After graduation, he would go on to a professional coaching career – one that has taken him to the highest levels of the sport.
He got his coaching start on staff at the University of Pennsylvania and Maryland before joining the pro ranks with the Philadelphia Union of the MLS. He was an assistant coach there before becoming technical director during his five seasons in Philadelphia.
