HARRISBURG (TNS) — Talk about lacking common sense and being unable to read the room — the courtroom — properly.
A man with a suspended license hopped on his courtroom Zoom call while driving.
The only problem was just that — he was driving, on camera, during the call, stunning the judge and his legal team.
The call went viral.
This all started with Corey Harris, who had a scheduled hearing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on May 15 in a case involving driving with a suspended license.
After introducing herself, the assistant public defender said that “Mr. Harris should be [present] via Zoom.”
Right when she said that, Harris joined the Zoom call.
But it didn’t take long for District Judge J. Cedric Simpson to notice that Harris was wearing a seatbelt in the video and was clearly in a vehicle that was in motion.
Taken aback, that’s when Simpson asked if Harris was the one behind the wheel.
“Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office,” Harris replied. “So just give me one second I’m parking right now.”
Based on his reply, it was painfully obvious to those in the court what was going on. The Zoom cameras panned toward the public defenders, who looked disappointed.
The judge seemingly couldn’t believe his eyes.
Others sitting in the back of the courtroom were seen attempting to hold back their laughter.
Gaining his composure, the judge asked Harris if he was stationary, but he wasn’t just yet.
Harris took his time to park the vehicle and once he did, Harris’ legal team requested an adjournment of the case for up to four weeks.
An exasperated Simpson, on the other hand, already had enough of Harris.
“OK, so maybe I don’t understand something,” the judge began. “This is a driving while license suspended [case] and he was just driving and he didn’t have a license.”
“Those are the charges, Your Honor, yes,” the public defender says.
Simpson then looked over Harrison’s paperwork and wasted no time in handing down his decision.
The result: Harris’ bond was revoked and he was ordered to turn himself in to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. that day.
“Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond,” Simpson said.
Upon hearing that, Harris looked dumbfounded.
“Oh my God,” Harris quietly responded in disbelief while tilting his head back into his driver’s seat as Simpson ended the hearing.
