AMHERST, Mass. – St. Bonaventure scored the first six runs of the game, but UMass struck for the next 10 as the Minutemen captured the opening contest of a three-game series Friday afternoon, 10-7.
The Bonnies had an early cushion thanks to a six-run second inning off two home runs.
Harrison Kaufman delivered a grand slam with a bomb to left. Later in the frame, Adam Rankie pounded a no-doubt two-run shot into the hedges beyond left field for a 6-0 advantage.
Unfortunately for Bona’s, that lead would be very short-lived.
UMass (19-23, 9-7 A-10) immediately rallied for five in the home half of the same inning as the ball kept flying out of the yard.
Braden Sullivan got the Minutemen on the board with a two-run homer to left center and later in the inning Mike Gervasi cracked a three-run shot to center to pull the hosts within one, 6-5.
The Minutemen pulled ahead in the fourth, first tying the game on a run-scoring single by Austin Burgess before Carter Hanson doubled in another for the lead.
Two Bonnies errors set the table for three more Minutemen runs in the seventh.
David Marshall Jr. ended the run for UMass, snapping Bona’s offensive drought with an RBI knock in the eighth to pull the Bonnies back within 10-7.
It would be as close as the Bonnies could get, however, as Leif Bigelow came on in relief for the Minutemen to get the final two outs of the eighth before turning in a perfect ninth to close the door.
With his single in the first and homer in the second, Rankie stretched his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. Jack Putney and Jayce Tharnish both had two hits apiece for the Bonnies (15-25, 5-11).
Bobby Finn was strong in relief, working 3.2 innings with three unearned runs against on two hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Ryan O’Connell pitched a scoreless inning as well. Michael Salina started (3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 K).
The teams are set for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
