The Era’s Marcie Schellhammer has been named a finalist in two categories in the 2024 Golden Quill competition.
The annual contest, held by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, recognizes professional and student excellence in written, photographic, illustration, broadcast, audio, video and digital journalism in Western Pennsylvania and nearby counties in Ohio and West Virginia.
Schellhammer is a finalist for Excellence in Written Journalism for a news feature for the story “Long Shot,” about the family of S.Sgt. Paul Akin searching for the family of S.Sgt. Richard Caserio from World War II. It was a mention in The Era column ‘Round the Square that connected Bradford’s Colosimo family to Akin’s family, which was detailed in the story.
Schellhammer is a finalist for columns as well. The entry, made up of three columns, included “Newspaper Week,” detailing how newspapers are a piece of history; “Love,” about the loss of her sister; and “Mail Thief,” about her daughter’s goofy cat hiding the mail, which incidentally, continues still.
Winners will be announced at the Golden Quill Awards presentation on May 28, at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
A graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, Schellhammer has been with The Era since 2001.
She has been honored for her professional achievements 15 times, four as a finalist in the Quill competition, and through the Pennsylvania News Media Association, 11 times — three for columns and eight for reporting.
She and her daughter, Emily, live in Bradford.
