JOHNSONBURG — The Kane Area Logger Safety Committee (KALSC) will host its 55th Annual Logger/Sawmiller Safety Meeting at the Johnsonburg Firehall on April 9.
KALSC, formed in 1968, comprises volunteers from hardwood companies and organizations throughout the region. This year’s program will begin with an afternoon safety class. The theme for the class is “FIRE,” and participants will learn about Pennsylvania’s growing use of prescribed fire as a forest management tool, what to do in the event of a forest fire and how to protect yourself and your equipment.
Presenters will be on hand from the PA Game Commission, PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources and local firefighting experts. West Penn Power will also provide electrical safety demonstrations. Guest speaker for the evening meeting will be Jeff Jenkins, Appalachian Region consultant for Forest Resources Association, a national organization working to promote public policy issues of importance to the forest products industry and to advance safety, operational efficiency and supply chain relations.
Jenkins will provide timely updates on the THAT’s Foundation’s “Six Rules for Logging Safety” initiative, FRA’s Safety Alerts, Logger of the Year Contest, and their advocacy on behalf of the U.S. forest and wood products industry. An exhibitor showcase will be held throughout the day, featuring safety equipment and service suppliers. A free catered dinner will also be provided.
SFI continuing education credits are available to those participating in the full day of events. Pre-registration is required for afternoon SFI class. The full event schedule includes SFI class from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., followed immediately by the Exhibitor Expo, dinner and the evening program.
