Crystal Fire Department of St. Marys was dispatched to a house fire at 138 Jackson Road at 8:17 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, firefighters found a working house fire with occupants entrapped. Mutual aid was requested from Johnsonburg, Fox Township and Emporium. Later in the incident the Elkland Search and Rescue unit was requested at the scene. The fire was declared under control at 10:57. After the fire was contained, the two occupants, Donald and Susan Mahovlich, were located and pronounced dead at the scene by Elk County Coroner Michelle A. Muccio-Krise. A report from Krise indicated both individuals appeared to have perished from smoke inhalation. Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department was on standby for St. Marys. Firefighters were on the scene for 7 ½ hours. Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
