FREDONIA, NY — Traveling to SUNY Fredonia this past weekend to compete in the North Western PA YMCA League Championships, the Bradford YMCA Barracudas boys and girls both took top ten finishes, with the boys claiming bronze and the girls earning sixth.
The Barracuda boys placed third out of nine teams and the girls placed sixth out of nine.
“We had a great team effort at the championship meet this year as 33 out of the 35 athletes we brought to the meet scored points for the team,” said Bradford head coach Patrick Hollenbeck. “We are still one of the smallest teams in the league, but we have a lot of talent and are able to compete with anyone.”
The successful weekend included 12 Barracudas being crowned league champions and five new team or league records. Bella Rhoades and Peyton Haight started off the weekend with first place finishes in the 1650 free while establishing new team and league records. Landon Johnson was a three-time champion and set two new team records, one of which was the 100 fly which was set by Bill Pierce in 1975. He also broke the 100 back record set by Tyler Sortore in 2016.
Kael Riekofsky continued the record setting weekend by breaking Johnson’s 11-12 boys 50 fly record and breaking his own 100 IM record. The other league champions for the team were Olivia Rhoades, Bodie Rhoades, Sammi Vecchio, Sean Storer, Micah Johnson, Quinlan Johnson, Quinn Irons, and Karsyn Gracey-Dalton.
The YMCA Barracudas will now have three weeks before they take 19 district qualifiers to Geneva, OH to compete in the Western PA YMCA District Championship meet from Thursday, March 7 to Saturday, March 9.
