(TNS) — A Punxsutawney man has been arrested after police say he stole over $10,000 from an American Legion in Jefferson County.
Ryan Kyser, 36, was charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property Tuesday, according to reports from WTAJ and The Punxsutawney Spirit.
On Feb. 12, police discovered that someone had broken into the Punxsutawney American Legion and stolen between $12,000 and $15,000.
Kyser called an officer two days later and, sounding scattered, said that at the Legion at the time of the burglary, news reports said.
Then on Feb. 16, police said he shared screenshots with them of him and someone else that appeared to implicate him in the crime. When officers then contacted Kyser, he admitted to committing the crime in order to pay outstanding debts.
On Feb. 17 another man came to police and said that personal items of his that had been stolen from the Legion had been returned by a third party who told him, Ryan wanted to make sure you got these back.”
Kyser is also the suspect in a theft that happened at Club 121 between Feb. 11-12. Police said he was captured on surveillance cameras breaking into the club’s safe.
