TOURISM: Have you ever wondered what it might be like to see Bradford for the first time? The state tourism website visitPA.com has an intriguing description of the community to draw in visitors, and has ranked one local site on its “Cozy Teatimes and Experiences in PA” list.
Bradford, in the region of the Pennsylvania Wilds, “started as a lumber town called Littleton, but when the oil gushed in the late 1800s, little Littleton became big Bradford, the ‘High-grade Oil Metropolis of the World.’”
That’s what the banner says on the front of The Era, too.
“Bradford produced more than 630,000,000 barrels of oil from 1871 to 1967. The largest town in McKean County, Bradford showcases its industrial history at the Penn-Brad Oil Museum; oil refineries and lumber mills still operate today. But Bradford is also an educational and arts center — The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and the Bradford Creative and Performing Arts Center provide culture and balance. The proximity of the Allegheny National Forest also makes the area pleasant to visit. Tourists also enjoy learning about lighters at the Zippo Visitor Center and shopping for locally made Case Cutlery.”
What about that cozy teatime?
That would be the Marilyn Horne Museum & Exhibit Center.
“Making it an afternoon tea for all to enjoy, Marilyn Horne Hall encourages larger parties of up to 24 to enjoy their tasty offerings and a tour of their beautiful museum. Located in the masterfully curated Marilyn Horne Museum dedicated to the legendary opera singer, you’ll be invited to dine in the La Fenice theater while listening to classical music. After finishing a delicious buffet-style teatime offering a traditional menu of high tea favorites, such as cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam, and custard tarts, join the director of the museum for an exclusive tour.”
