PIZZA: Do you consider yourself a pizza traditionalist? What toppings do you select?
A recent study by Pizzello.com ventured into the contentious realm of pizza toppings, asking which varieties the public deems unacceptable for the dinner table.
Leading the pack of divisive flavors was the Hawaiian pizza, with 26% of participants decrying its combination of ham and pineapple and the clash of flavors. Following in second place was the white pizza, with 22% of the vote for this pizza without tomato sauce, and instead coated with garlic and ricotta.
Mushroom pizza was in third place, with textural issues of slippery or chewy causing diners to dislike the fungi. Next up is spinach and feta pizza, a sharp departure from traditional pizza toppings that can be seen as overpowering, especially with the strong, salty tang of feta cheese, which may not appeal to all taste buds.
In fifth is meat lovers’ pizza, too intense and greasy for some, with the abundance of meats overwhelming the palate and the pizza itself, sometimes resulting in a soggy crust beneath the weight of all the toppings.
BBQ chicken pizza comes in at sixth with a smoky sweetness that’s too far from traditional Italian pizza roots for some. Sausage pizza is seventh, as its spicy and herby profile can dominate the pizza, overpowering hopes for a balanced flavor.
Surprisingly, the supreme pizza came in eighth. Some find the medley of flavors overwhelming and chaotic. Coming in ninth was the veggie pizza, which is a turn-off for some as a bit bland or too ‘healthy-tasting’ for those who prefer the indulgence of meatier, cheesier options.
In 10th place was the four-cheese pizza, which some say is too monotonous in taste.
