ERIE — Feb. 12 to 16 is National Salute to Veteran Patients Week at VA Hospitals across the country and this year’s theme at the Erie VA Medical Center calls for community involvement.
Salute to Veteran Patients Week is nationally recognized to show appreciation for veterans, increase community awareness and encourage citizens to get involved with volunteering in VA hospitals.
This year, the Erie VA Medical Center wants the community organizations and individuals to respond to the call to visit their veteran residents, show appreciation for all their sacrifices, and consider volunteering at the Erie VA Medical Center.
One key volunteer assignment that is in need is volunteer drivers at the facility, specifically Erie, Crawford and McKean counties (Erie, Meadville, Titusville, Linesville, Bradford and Smethport).
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Volunteer Transportation Network (VTN) Program is a courtesy service providing free transportation to and from VA medical appointments for veterans with no means of transportation. This program assists many disabled veterans who live on small, fixed incomes, often many miles from the nearest VA Medical Center or clinic.
“We are seeking dedicated volunteers to transport veterans to and from vital medical appointments”, stated Stacy Farrell, Erie VA Medical Center Voluntary Service Specialist. “Unfortunately, many of our veterans residing within these rural counties face transportation challenges that hinder their access to essential medical services. Adding volunteer DAV VTN drivers within these areas will make a difference by alleviating these challenges.”
The time commitment for volunteer drivers is flexible and based on the volunteer’s availability. The requirements to become a volunteer driver are to possess a valid driver’s license; be at least 21 years old; be willing and able to pass a physical exam; and provide proof of current auto liability insurance.
