SMETHPORT — Two Blair County men were jailed Tuesday following a traffic stop in Sergeant Township where more than 2 pounds of marijuana was found in their vehicle.
William Taneyhill, 46, of Newry, and William Jenkins, 44, of Duncansville, were both charged with possession with intent to deliver, felonies; possession of unstamped cigarettes, misdemeanors; and possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors.
According to the criminal complaint, at 12:56 p.m. Tuesday, troopers were sitting along U.S. Route 219 using a radar gun for speed enforcement. A Cadillac sport-utility vehicle went by their location at 75 mph in a 55 mph zone. The troopers made a traffic stop, and as they approached, they saw several cartons of unstamped cigarettes in the back of the SUV. When the troopers began speaking to the driver, Jenkins, they noticed a backpack behind the driver’s seat and on the floor at the feet of the passenger in the SUV, Taneyhill.
The trooper spoke to Jenkins, asking several questions during which the trooper felt he was being deceptive. The trooper told him to be honest, and tell him how much marijuana he had in the SUV. Jenkins said, “A good bit.” When the trooper asked how much that was, Jenkins said, “Enough where you’d want to throw me in jail, probably,” the complaint stated.
Jenkins turned over the marijuana to the trooper and allowed him to search the SUV. Troopers found a total of 18 cartons of cigarettes, six THC vape pens, six marijuana joints, more than 2 pounds of marijuana, a clear container with a pink pill, a grinder and a bag with a freshness packet. Both men were arrested, the complaint read.
Both were arraigned before on-call District Judge Bill Todd and were jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail each. Both are scheduled for Central Court on Feb. 15.
