(TNS) — The battle for student loan forgiveness continues, with some good news for some borrowers.
Recently, the Biden administration announced that it is canceling $5 billion in debt for 74,000 borrowers, some of whom have worked 10 years in public service sector jobs.
The announcement said that of the 74,000 borrowers that were approved for relief on Jan. 19, nearly 44,000 are nurses, teachers, firefighters and other individuals who earned forgiveness after 10 years of public service. Another 30,000 of them are borrowers “who have been in repayment for at least 20 years but never received the relief they earned through income-driven repayment plans.”
Biden also added that his administration was able to come through with relief due to “fixes we made to broken student loan programs that were preventing borrowers from getting relief they were entitled to under law.”
This new round of student loan forgiveness brings the total number of people who have had debt canceled under the Biden administration to over 3.7 million, according to a statement from the White House.
This all comes after the Supreme Court denied the White House’s student loan debt relief plan last year, which sparked the White House to pursue smaller relief programs, NBC News reported.
“We are continuing to pursue an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible,” Biden said in the statement.
