Self-checkout ‘horror show’ may become a thing of the past: reports

(TNS) — Self-checkout is starting to become quite a problem for retailers.

From heightened retail theft to long lines, corporations appear to be rethinking the whole concept of having customers ringing themselves up.

Quartz reports how the “self-checkout kiosk horror show” could very well go extinct in the near future, with many stores across the Untied States reversing course on the process.

This, explains “Good Morning America,” is due to the aforementioned financial loss thanks to retail theft — for which self-checkout lanes provide ample opportunities for — as well as lines that stretch far beyond where the kiosks are. Major retail giants such as Target and Dollar General are among those taking a good, hard look at the self-checkout situation.

But there’s one other reason that self-checkouts are being reassessed: The same “Good Morning America” article states how customers just want another human to interact with at the store, especially if they’re experiencing issues.

“A lot of us want a human being,” says one such shopper, Julie Domina, to the show. “We want to have that conversation. We want to be able to voice our concerns or ask a question about a product.”

PennLive has also previously reported how companies such as Trader Joe’s stress how they don’t have self-checkout lanes as an option, with president, Jon Basalone, admitting on a Trader Joe’s podcast how he himself had difficulty navigating one.

“I was in a store, and I couldn’t get the thing to scan…and then the person came over and was trying to explain to me,” said Basalone. “I’m like, I do this for a living, and I can’t get this thing to work!”

Adds he: “We believe in people. We’re not trying to get rid of our crew members for efficiency’s sake.”
