PORT ALLEGANY — The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) will host a public comment session from 10-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Inc. located at 4743 Route 155 in Port Allegany.
Those without access to affordable internet or computers to get online live in the digital divide, according to PBDA. Internet for All is a way to help bridge the divide. PBDA wants to hear from residents at this community meeting as they share their plan.
The vision for digital equity in the Commonwealth is to foster and create equitable, affordable, and robust high-speed broadband infrastructure and services that support digital dignity for all residents and connect Pennsylvania for the 21st century and beyond.
The draft plan is available online. Its vision: Digital dignity reflects the American value of opportunity for all — every person should have the same access to participate in our increasingly connected society. The goals are simple. Get people online with the right tools so they can grow the skills needed to stay safe and secure and strengthen the foundation of the community.
“Our goal is universal broadband and fair, effective, and affordable support to get every Pennsylvanian to feel comfortable and included online by 2028. However, as technology changes, we anticipate that computer skills and needs will continue to evolve. Most of all, our goal is a lasting framework of infrastructure, community support systems, and resources that allow our residents to learn and thrive through all stages of life through childhood, adulthood, and dignified and stable retirement,” the drafters of the plan wrote.
“Every Pennsylvanian should have the infrastructure available to subscribe to reliable, high speed broadband service, and service plans should include affordable pricing options. Every resident should be able to have a device that meets their needs, whether their needs are best met through a tablet, smartphone, laptop, or desktop. Every resident should be able to take classes, find assistance, and gain the skills they need to use the internet effectively. Online security is important for all Pennsylvanians, whether they are beginners or experienced in
digital practices. The state can administer funds, but services and resources rely on strong and dedicated partners working on the ground and within communities.”
A boxed meal will be provided. Children are welcome and there will be coloring books and crayons available to them.
