(TNS) — A special dog is going to be honored in a big way.
The dog, Pennsylvania State Police K9 Rom, who was heavily involved in the capture of Chester County prison escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante alongside Pennsylvania State Police, will be honored at the 2023 National Dog Show, state police announced in a Facebook post.
In addition, Trooper Lucious Fludd will sing the national anthem at the opening of the show, alongside the PSP color guard, PSP wrote in the post.
The 2023 National Dog Show will air at noon on NBC Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Cavalcante, 34, was captured 14 days after his escape from Chester County Prison and is now being held at Pennsylvania’s most advanced and expensive prison — the State Correctional Institution Phoenix. The institution is a maximum-security facility in Montgomery County and was also the same facility that housed former comedian Bill Cosby.
As previously reported, Cavalcante escaped while awaiting transfer to state prison after being sentenced to life for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in 2021, according to police. Prosecutors say he wanted to stop her from telling police that he was wanted in a killing in his home country of Brazil.
He was on the run for two weeks while evading hundreds of law enforcement agencies after escaping on Aug. 31 by climbing up a prison recreation yard wall, running across the roof and jumping onto the ground.
He’s currently being kept in what officials describe as a “specialized observation unit.”
