1 dead in pileup on 1-80 in Mercer County, officials say

(TNS) — One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on I-80 in Mercer County, authorities said.

The pileup occurred at about 5:45 a.m. in the interstate highway’s eastbound lanes near mile marker 14 in East Lackawannock Township, state police Lt. Adam Reed and Trooper Bertha Cazy said.

The eastbound lanes remained closed at noon and an “extended closure” is expected, Reed said.

Reed confirmed at least one fatality but did not have additional information.

The Mercer County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene, according to TribLIVE news partner WTAE. The coroner’s officer declined comment Wednesday afternoon.

State police remained on the scene at 12:30 p.m., Cazy said.

I-80’s exit 15, the exit closest to the accident, takes motorists on Route 19 toward both Thiel College and Westminster College, an online map said.
