held on felony theft charges
SMETHPORT — A Kane man is in McKean County Jail for admittedly stealing items and cash from a business in Kane.
Garrett McKinney, 26, of Poplar Street, is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition and access device fraud, both third-degree felonies.
According to the criminal complaint, between Jan. 1 and Oct. 30, McKinney took at least $4,121.59 worth of either cash or items from a known victim or business owner in Wetmore Township. The amount includes $240 in cash, $512.50 worth of fuel, $725 worth of vehicle parts, $900 in hand tools, $1,371.52 in cash wages, and $372.57 worth of animal feed. In addition, McKinney used the victim’s access device, the company fuel card or verbally charged the fuel to the victim’s account at the point of sale, knowing he was not authorized to do so for personal use, stealing $512.50 between Jan. 1 and Oct. 30, the report read.
McKinney originally denied the accusations; however, he later admitted to police to have stolen the above items, according to the complaint.
He was arraigned Monday by Magisterial District Judge William Todd and held on $30,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 9.
SMETHPORT — A Bradford man was arraigned Monday on allegations of leaving the scene after striking a pedestrian in August.
Robert M. Kinney, 63, of Orchard Place, is charged with simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor; accidents involving death or personal injury, a first-degree misdemeanor; and careless driving, a summary offense, following a traffic stop nearly a month after the original motor vehicle accident occurred.
According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 30, a pedestrian walked into the side of his car, but he drove away. At the time, police had only his vehicle’s description. On Sept. 20, Bradford City Police noticed a similar vehicle and pulled it over. Kinney stated he had been the driver previously when the officers asked about the hit and run, but said that he thought it was an insurance scam.
The complaint stated that at the time of the accident, Kinney had circled back and saw the other driver sitting on the sidewalk and thought she was fine. He didn’t think he did anything wrong, the complaint read, and did not stay or return to the scene.
Kinney is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9.
SMETHPORT — An inmate of the McKean County Jail will face a charge in county court for allegedly spitting at a corrections officer.
Keith E. Smith, 42, of Bolivar Drive, had a charge of aggravated harassment by prisoner, a third-degree felony, bound over to McKean County Court at a hearing Monday before District Judge Bill Todd.
According to the criminal complaint, a state police officer was called to the jail for a report of an incident in August. The trooper watched a video of a corrections officer who was delivering medication to Smith. When the corrections officer requested to verify that he had taken it, the inmate turned around and spit toward the cell door.
Smith remains jailed on this charge on $10,000 bail.
