WEST ELLICOTT, N.Y. — Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, a fire was reported at the Colony Motel near Jamestown.
Two occupants and a firefighter were taken to UPMC Chautauqua to be evaluated for injuries, according to reports. Fifteen others, who were staying at the motel, have reportedly been displaced and are working with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
Reports indicate the fire began in the back of the building and quickly spread to both floors of the two story structure. Due to a partial collapse, it was difficult for crews from 12 responding stations to access all areas.
Celeron Hose Co. Chief Jamison Justham told local news agencies, “We’re working with the ladder trucks out front, and then once we’re able to knock down a significant amount of it, we’re going to try and pull some of the metal roof away, and then continue extinguishing it from the rear facility.”
The chief added fighting the fire will keep Fairmount Avenue closed, and if emergency demolition of the motel is necessary, that will delay reopening the road.
The investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
